Jūdō (柔道, lit. "the way of gentleness") is a modern martial art created by Jigorō Kanō (嘉納治五郎) in 1882. Kanō created jūdō from a wide variety of koryū jujutsu systems and adapted the techniques to appeal to a modern, post-Meiji Restored Japan.

In modern times jūdō has become an olympic sport and its dan/kyū ranking system has been adopted by several other martial arts, in addition to the Japanese boardgame 'go'.
